E-Rate: A quick refresher
Category 1
Category 1: E-Rate provides discounts on internet and data transmission services. Schools and libraries are eligible for up to a 90% discount rate on approved Category 1 services. Voice services including VOIP are no longer eligible. Supporting documentation (ex. NSLP participation rates) should be continually updated to maximize eligible discounts.
Category 2
Category 2: E-Rate provides discounts on equipment, licensing, and service. Up to an 85% discount rate can achieved on internal connections (ex. network switches, wireless access points, uninterruptible power supply), managed internal broadband services, and basic maintenance of internal connections. Category 2 budgets are based on a per-student count for schools and square footage for libraries.
